A new web-based resource called "The Canterbury Dictionary of the Hymnology" has been launched, according to a news release from Canterbury Press. It is the first attempt to replace John Julian's "A Dictionary of Hymnology" (first publishing in 1892) in more than a century. The dictionary is the result of the 12 years' research by a team of editors headed by Professor JR Watson, University of Durham, UK; Emma Hornby, University of Bristol, UK; and Carlton R Young, Nashville, US. It is intended to be an essential reference resource for scholars of global hymnody, with information on the hymns of many countries and languages ana strong emphasis on historial as well as a tool for anyone interested in hymn as an art form. The dictionary will be up-to-date timely, comprehensive, global, reliable, carefully edited and ongoing, according to the news release. It includes more than 4,000 individual entries on writers, composers, hymns and songs, and feature articles on major figures and movements in worldwide hymnology.
